Where is my design file?

The three cases, explained plainly: what we keep, what we don't, and what shoppers download.

← All articles

Your Rhino file is your design. Here is exactly what happens to it, in plain words. Each product in the app shows which case applies under Original file, and the Storage figures on the Overview page count how many products use each case.

The three cases

1. Upload file, with "Keep my original" ticked

The box is ticked by default. Your .3dm file is sent to our server and stored privately, so we can update the 3D model automatically when we improve the viewer.

  • It is never public: not shown to shoppers, not to other merchants.
  • The product shows "Stored privately on The RenderX" with its size, and a Delete original button. Delete it any time; the 3D model stays live, it just can't be updated automatically any more.
  • It is also deleted when you remove 3D from the product, and 48 hours after you uninstall the app (unless you reinstall within that time).

2. Upload file, with "Keep my original" unticked

Your .3dm file never leaves your computer. Your browser converts it on the spot, and only the results (the 3D display model and its pictures) are uploaded to your Shopify Files.

  • The product shows "Not kept. Re-upload to update".
  • When we improve the viewer, this product can't be updated automatically; you'll see a note asking you to re-upload it.

You paste a link to the file in your Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box or any https address. Our server fetches the file and streams it straight through to your browser, which converts it. We never save the file: not to disk, not to our storage, not anywhere.

  • We keep only the link, encrypted, so we can fetch it again when the viewer improves.
  • Once a week we check the link still works by reading its first few bytes; we don't keep them.
  • No screen shows your link in full, not even to our staff: you see it masked, and our staff see only the website's name (for example drive.google.com).
  • The file stays in your drive. Turn off sharing at any time to revoke our access. Your 3D model stays live; automatic updates pause until the link works again, and the app tells you so.

What shoppers download

To show a 3D model in a web browser, the browser has to download a 3D model. That is true of every web 3D viewer. So shoppers' browsers download:

  • the 3D display model (a compressed .glb file made for viewing), and
  • three pictures of the ring, one per metal.

They never get your Rhino .3dm file. The display model is built for viewing: a compressed render mesh with no Rhino history, curves or NURBS surfaces. It keeps only the names of layers, objects and materials, which the viewer uses to tell metal from stone. These files live in your own Shopify Files and are served by Shopify's CDN, like your product photos.

Who can see your designs

  • Your designs are used only to show your own viewer on your own store.
  • They are never shown to other merchants, never shared, never sold, and never used to train anything.
  • Stored originals are sent only back to your own signed-in admin, inside the app, when you re-convert a product or export an STL. There is no public page or link that opens or downloads them. Our staff see only that a product has one, and its size.
